Vardenafil tablets are a prescription medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult men. ED is when you cannot get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual activity. Vardenafil helps improve blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This medication does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Clinical Information

Evidence-based details for healthcare providers

Use as directed by your healthcare provider. This medicine is usually taken only when needed before sexual activity, and not more than once per day. Do not change your dose or take extra doses, even if it does not work the first time. Your healthcare provider will decide the right dose and how long you should use it.

Vardenafil helps treat ED by relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. It does this by blocking an enzyme called PDE5, which helps keep a natural chemical signal (cGMP) working longer so blood vessels stay more open. It does not cause an erection by itself, so sexual arousal is still needed. Many people notice an effect within about 30 to 60 minutes, and the benefit may last for several hours; this varies from person to person and may be affected by food and alcohol.

Do not use if you take any nitrate medicine for chest pain (such as nitroglycerin tablets/spray/patch, isosorbide mononitrate, or isosorbide dinitrate) because your blood pressure can drop to a dangerous level. Do not use if you take riociguat (Adempas) for pulmonary hypertension because it can cause severe low blood pressure. Do not use if you have had an allergic reaction to vardenafil or any ingredient in the tablet. Do not use if your healthcare provider has told you not to have sexual activity because of a heart problem. Do not use if you have certain serious heart conditions (such as recent heart attack or stroke, uncontrolled irregular heartbeat, or very low or very high blood pressure) unless your prescriber says it is safe. Not for use in women or in children under 18.

This medication may interact with: (1) Nitrates (nitroglycerin, Imdur, Isordil) and nitrite “poppers” (amyl nitrite): SEVERE—do not combine; can cause life-threatening low blood pressure. (2) Riociguat (Adempas): SEVERE—do not combine. (3) Alpha-blockers used for prostate or blood pressure problems (tamsulosin/Flomax, doxazosin/Cardura, terazosin/Hytrin): MODERATE to SEVERE—may cause dizziness or fainting; your prescriber may adjust doses and separate timing. (4) Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors that raise vardenafil levels (ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, cobicistat, clarithromycin): MODERATE to SEVERE—higher risk of side effects; dose changes or avoidance may be needed. (5) Other ED medicines (sildenafil/Viagra, tadalafil/Cialis, avanafil/Stendra) or ED injections/suppositories: MODERATE—do not combine unless specifically directed. (6) Blood pressure medicines and alcohol: MODERATE—can increase lightheadedness; limit alcohol and stand up slowly. (7) Grapefruit or grapefruit juice: MODERATE—may increase side effects; avoid or limit and ask your pharmacist. Always tell your healthcare provider about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products you use.

Common (up to about 1 in 10 people): headache, flushing (warm/red face), stuffy or runny nose, indigestion or upset stomach, dizziness. Less common: nausea, back pain, muscle aches, trouble sleeping, fast heartbeat, rash. Uncommon but important: changes in vision (blurred vision, sensitivity to light) or hearing problems (ringing, sudden hearing loss). Rare but serious—get emergency help right away: chest pain, fainting, signs of an allergic reaction (hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat, trouble breathing), or an erection lasting more than 4 hours (priapism), which can cause permanent damage if not treated quickly. Side effects often improve as the medicine wears off; call your healthcare provider if symptoms are severe or do not go away.

Store at room temperature (68-77 degrees F / 20-25 degrees C). Keep tablets in the original container and keep the container tightly closed. Protect from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom or near a kitchen sink. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of unused or expired tablets through a pharmacy take-back program when available.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

How long before sex should I take vardenafil?

Take it exactly as your healthcare provider tells you. Many people take it about 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity, but timing can vary. Do not take more than one dose in a day.

2

Do I need to be sexually aroused for it to work?

Yes. Vardenafil helps your body respond to sexual stimulation, but it does not cause an erection on its own. Foreplay and arousal are still needed.

3

Can I take vardenafil with alcohol?

Small amounts of alcohol may be okay for some people, but alcohol can make dizziness and low blood pressure more likely. Heavy drinking can also make ED worse. If you drink, limit alcohol and stop if you feel lightheaded.

4

What medicines should never be taken with vardenafil?

Do not take vardenafil with any nitrate medicine (often used for chest pain) or with riociguat (Adempas). Combining these can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Tell your prescriber and pharmacist about all medicines you take so they can check for interactions.

5

What should I do if I get chest pain after taking vardenafil?

Get emergency medical help right away. Do not take nitrates (like nitroglycerin) unless emergency medical staff tell you to, because it can cause a severe blood pressure drop. Tell the medical team you took vardenafil.

6

What is priapism and what should I do if it happens?

Priapism is an erection that lasts more than 4 hours. It is rare but serious and can cause permanent injury. Get emergency medical help right away if this happens.

7

Why might vardenafil not work the first time?

It may take a few tries to learn the best timing and to see what works for you. Eating a heavy meal and drinking a lot of alcohol can reduce how well it works for some people. If it still does not help, talk with your prescriber before changing your dose.
