Frequently Asked Questions

Anyone 18 years or older who is interested in quitting tobacco use can participate in the program. Our licensed pharmacists can prescribe FDA-approved Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRT) and other non-NRT options based on individual needs.

The program includes a comprehensive health screening, counseling, and access to both NRT and non-NRT medications like varenicline and bupropion. We will also notify your primary care provider if needed and provide you with resources like the Virginia Quit Line.

Our pharmacist will review your medical history, current health conditions, and tobacco usage to recommend an appropriate cessation therapy. We may suggest monotherapy or combination NRT depending on your nicotine dependence, smoking habits, and personal preferences.

We offer both Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products, such as nicotine patches, gum, lozenges, nasal sprays, and inhalers, as well as non-NRT options like bupropion and varenicline.

  • Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT): Doses are based on your nicotine use level (low, medium, or high). For example, heavy smokers may start with a 21mg nicotine patch, while lighter smokers may use a 14mg patch or nicotine gum.
  • Non-NRTs: Bupropion and varenicline are prescribed based on a step-up dosing schedule to ensure maximum effectiveness and minimize side effects.

The duration of treatment varies by individual but typically lasts around 8-12 weeks. In some cases, treatment can be extended up to 24 weeks, depending on progress and the type of medication used.

Yes, if you consent, we will notify your primary care provider when initiating treatment. If you don’t have a primary care provider, we can provide resources to help you establish one.

If you’ve attempted to quit using methods like “cold turkey” or other nicotine replacement therapies, our pharmacists can tailor a more effective treatment plan based on past experiences and medical history.

The cost will depend on the type of medication prescribed and your insurance coverage. Many insurance plans cover tobacco cessation therapies. We recommend contacting us for more details based on your specific situation.

You can begin by filling out the Tobacco Cessation Self-Screening Intake Form on our website or visiting Kare Pharmacy in person for an assessment.
